Shotgun House Legacy Site Tour
Step inside one of Winston-Salem’s most powerful symbols of African American history and resilience. Discover the origins and significance of the shotgun house, an iconic architectural form found throughout the South and deeply connected to the African American experience.
As you move through the restored shotgun house and grounds, you’ll encounter the voices and memories of local residents and gain insight into the challenges and triumphs that defined life in Happy Hill, one of Winston-Salem’s oldest African American neighborhoods.
July 29 – August 1
Visitors are welcome to tour the site anytime from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Tickets: $20

$10 – Shuttle to and from the Convention Center to the Legacy Site

Heritage Unveiled Tour
Journey through historic African American neighborhoods, and uncover the stories behind colorful murals and public art.  Take part in an interactive artistic scavenger hunt that reveals hidden connections between history, culture, and creativity.  
Then, step into living history at the Shotgun House Legacy Site, where you’ll be drawn into the spirit of a traditional red light rent party and experience the resilience, community, and joy that sustained generations –(There will be a lot of pickled items!)

Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin Celebrity Tour
Join us for a special cultural experience honoring the legacy of Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin, who was the Executive Producer Emeritus of the International Black Theatre Festival. This unique tour features special guest Celeste Beatty, the first Black woman to own a U.S. brewery. Explore historic African American neighborhoods, view vibrant murals, and visit the Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin Library Building before gathering at the Delta Arts Center for an engaging talk, tasting, and brunch.

Guests will enjoy a curated brew and wine tasting inspired by Beatty’s cookbook, Harlem Brew Soul: A Beer-Infused Soul Food Cookbook, which celebrates the rich connections between African American culinary traditions, brewing history, and culture.

Trolley & Bus Tours

Embark on a captivating journey that delves deep into the heart of Black heritage and culture. QR codes enhance the experience. Tours last 2 hours. Trolley Tour: $60 per person (minimum/maximum of 28-29 in the group)
Bus Tour - $60 per person-minimum of 20, maximum of 55 people in the group.

Walking Tour

Trace the footsteps of history, Tours are offered of Historic Happy Hill, Downtown Winston-Salem, East Winston, Innovation Quarter-the former Black Business District. Walk and talk about the depths of culture and history. Tours last about 1- 1.5 hours. $25 per person.

Step on Tour

You provide the transportation; we provide the experienced guide! Tours generally last about 2 hours and depart from designated locations. $400 for groups up to 20, $500 for groups of 20 - 48.

Shotgun House Legacy Site

Through the restoration of the early twentieth-century shotgun house, the site serves as a vivid depiction of the lived experiences during pivotal periods such as Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and other landmark events. Group Tours by Appt. - $20 per person Minimum of 20 people.
