Place-Based Immersion Learning Program for Clergy, Lay Ministers, and Divinity Students
In line with TCA’s mission to empower educators and facilitate learning Local, Black, and “Hard History,” this program, inspired by our Winston-Salem Forsyth County Teacher training, seeks to give our Clergy, Elders, and Lay Ministers a wide range of knowledge on the history and culture of Winston-Salem to better serve our Church communities at large.
Lectures
This course will consist of Three Main Sessions: Essentials, History, and Hermeneutics, with three lectures in each session.
Essentials
We'll learn on-site at Home Moravian Church and St. Philips Moravian, the oldest standing African American Church in North Carolina, the essential tools of historic interpretation.
History
We will then move to the Enterprise Center and, with the help of our local excursion tours, History, will focus on the history of Winston-Salem and the vicinity.
<br
Hermeneutics
Hermeneutics, we will examine the history and geography of the city through the lens of contextual hermeneutics. SECULAR vs. SACRED.
TCA Tours
Triad Cultural Arts offers regular guests a chance to get to know the city’s African American Legacy through Bus, Trolley, or Walking Tours. During this course, Clergy, Elders, and Lay Ministers will have the ability to experience all of these tours at a bundled price of $50 as part of our field study.
Walking tours of St. Philips Moravian Church and the Shotgun House Legacy Site will be foundational to our understanding of life prior to the 20th Century.
Our Trolley Tour of East Side Winston-Salem will provide an understanding of how this region’s history impacts the present, while Events like Freedom Day and Juneteenth will provide insight into how different communities reckon with their past.
