Kate B. Reynolds Hospital

The Kate B. Reynolds Hospital opened in 1938 with one hundred beds for the treatment of black patients and the education of black medical students.  On May 15, 1938 a “city-Wide Negro Appreciation Service was held at the Bowman Gray Memorial Stadium to honor the hospital’s donors and the city of Winston-Salem.  The choir was comprised of 1,000 black voices anchored by the Winston-Salem Teacher’s College 500 voice student chorus (now Winston-Salem State University) .Often referred to as “Katie B.” the hospital provided care for thirty-two years until Reynolds Memorial/Reynolds Health Center replaced it in 1970.
